The Happy Family
So it is February. Black history month and i have not made my normal black history month post. Why? I dont know. Mostly because i am just annoyed. Why is it that my son at 6 can name 6-10 items invented or improved things by someone black, but there are adults that can not name one with certainty.

Items used everyday. Items we mostly take for granted. It is disheartening sometimes.

I was going to make a fun little poll of some items, but changed my mind.

So i think i will just leave it at that.

Where are all the good movies and the documentaries that they usually play during this month? Some of them are movies you cant just run to blockbuster to rent but they usually come on tv during February and this year, nuffin. Just plum annoying. Watch there will be a ton of stuff for women history month in march.

heheh i think this came about from some juvie show i was watching on mtv and the kids just really annoyed me. None of the kids, black, white, asian, whatever had any pride in themselves or anything.

I thought it was bad when i was growing up, but it just amazes me when i see the kids even in my son's school. And they are in one of the best schools around here. But even there, the selfconfidence of some of the kids is horrible.

BLAH i dont know.

Anyway, in most cases it is simply things that were just improved on.

OH yeah, add to that that philly has been taking a US history class and the book they are using just really ticks me off. Almost as much as the way his teacher words things. Sometimes it is so annoying that i can barely read the info to help.

Hmm Oh yeah and my personal favorite the party at one of the colleges here that took place on MLK day. here it is 2007 and i swear some attitudes are worse against people that are different from them now then they were in the late 80s. I mean really you would think we would process more not revert more.

I cannot name anyone...I think it's because when I do research to see who did what, I pay attention to the country they are from. If they are American, then Yay! Anywhere else and I feel down.

I haven't seen alot of documentaries/films this month either. Now that I think about it, the only one I've seen is a re-airing of a PBS special that traced genetics to find out where in Africa people were descended from. Before I watched that I hadn't really thought about how discouraging it would be to not have any idea where you were descended from other than "Africa".

Disney had this BEAUTIful movie... I think it was called Harmony!. I would LOVE for my kids to see it. But I can not find it anywhere.

It was about an all white boys school and they had a famous choir. And there was a little black boy that was like the groundskeeper son or soemthing like that. Not really sure how he was there. But the one white boy became friends with the black boy and they had beautiful voices. They could just sing heavenly.

nad i always loved that movie and disney doesnt play it anymore.

Roots hasn't even come on this year. What about Queen? Brewster's Place? Not to mention all teh hallmark movies that have been made based off of true stories. I mean seriously they havent even played them on the hallmark channel.

Some of these stories i really want the kids to see, but man.

I think i am just tried of people knowing in and out Micheal Jordans record or Lebron jame's stats. instead of knowing WHY we have MLK day, Who Harriet Tubman was, Who Thurgood Marshall Was, Who Dorthy was...

But it just seems that none of that is important anymore. All that is is how many baskets so and so made in a game.

And it isnt just a black thing either.

it is a human thing because i must admit I almost passed out when one of the kids i was tutoring didnt know who Ronald Reagan was, Oh my personal favorite thought our vice president was name Dick Rumsfield.

I think it is sad how some teachers treat Black History Month. My kids each were assigned reports to do and had to choose the person they would do it on. Most of the kids in their class chose LaBron James, or some Rappers. Makes me want to scream. With all the wonderful people to learn about out there this is the best teachers and parents can find for their kids to learn about!! *sigh*

Hope's Paper was on Guion S. Bluford - First African American in Space
Will's was on Thurgood Marshall

Oh and for what it is worth I can name several people who would be wonderful to learn about.
Garrett Morgan (invented the gas mask and stop light, among many other things)
Daniel Halle Williams - Was NOT only the first African American to perform open heart surgery...he was the first person of any race to perform open heart surgery. He is also credited with a number of inventions.

I could go on and on....but really it is a major pet peeve of mine that people can tell you 1001 facts about LeBron James, and various other sports figures and entertainers...but ask a kid (or even some adults) who Thurgood Marshall or Daniel Hale Williams was and they don't have a clue.

When i think about how brillant my parents are. I mean that isnt just tooting their horns, my parents are smart people. But instead of being praised for being educated, they have been called sell outs by members of the community they grew up in. The same people that beg dad for favors all the time when he was a dentist but when he got sick, none of them could be found.

Yeah... it just.. ugh. i think this year i am just so annoyed that Wesley at 6 is so expressive and it just drievs me crazy seeing all the kids in his school that could just give a darn.
